A Huge Success for All Involved!
We wrap up our 7th season of SOAK and yet another sequence of engaged audiences, artist exchanges, happy students, and good cheer around the neighborhood. A big THANK YOU to this year’s amazing artists and teachers who made SOAK the success that it was! Of course, SOAK also couldn’t happen without YOU – thank you for your support, for filling the room with your energy, and to those who weren’t with us physically, who sent us your good thoughts from afar. THANK you to our donors, partners, sponsors, and volunteers YOUR support was essential to make SOAK a reality.
SOAK presented a cascade of acts and training in theater, butoh, dance, and voice this May and June at our home, CAVE, and at the Voorhees Theatre at the New York College of Technology. SOAK broadened the perceptions of our artists and audiences with work that was experimental, rigorous, and thought-provoking. SOAK created connections among many diverse individuals enriching the cultural and social relationships that lead to a healthy community.
We presented the work of 11 artists based in New York
We hosted both premieres and works-in-progress
- We presented SOAK through a new partnership with the New York City College of Technology: City Tech Theatreworks in which we were able to work with City Tech faculty and students
- The LEIMAY 2017-2018 Fellowship Artists collectively produced and curated the SOAK performances with the LEIMAY Directors
We offered two LEIMAY LUDUS Labs, including one with longtime friend, butoh dancer Shinichi Iova-Koga (Switzerland) and the annual LEIMAY Ludus Summer Intensive with Artistic Director Ximena Garnica
We continued our post-performance discussions and hosted them for all performances; this kind of engagement, while also deepening the audience experience, was insightful and very helpful to the artists, especially the ones showing works in progress
We hosted yet another fun-filled Block Party, where children and adults, strangers and friends, came together to share food, performances, and fun! We had a great variety of performing artists including opening music by Socrates (or some of you know him as Jack) and closing set by Jeremy Slater; a tap dance performance by Sandra Kluge; an audience engaged performance by drag queen FreeDa Banana; a DJ set by Pithy DJ; live music by Caleb Kruzel; as well as various durational performance art pieces from Lou Mandolini and Hee Ran Lee. On top of these acts, there were activity stations by Irena Romendik, Brandon Perdomo, and Caca Macedo.
We presented a premiere from the LEIMAY Ensemble: LEIMAY Unplugged
We fostered greater ties with our local neighborhood businesses, namely National Sawdust, Scosha, Grand Street Dental, Nitehawk Cinema, Brooklyn Denim Co., Eight of Swords Tattoo, Narcisse, Antoinette Vintage, Retro Fitness, Sunday in Brooklyn, Modo Yoga NYC, and the wonderful Wythe Hotel; we also thank our additional raffle sponsors HERE Arts Center and Pilates with Mariana who contributed to this year’s Lucky Cookie Time.
700 people attended the eight diverse festival shows, workshops and post-performance discussions at CAVE, the Voorhees Theatre at City Tech and at our LEIMAY Block Party.
Over 100 people participated in our sixth Lucky Cookie Time raffle and 15 lucky winners won prizes from our neighborhood supporters.
We want to thank our partners, funders, audience, volunteers, and artists! It was their support and participation that made it possible. We look forward to sharing with you many more performances and art events in the upcoming seasons! THANK YOU!
