Encounters with LEIMAY, Part 2
Public Symposium, Solo Study, and Studies for Frantic Beauty
This afternoon with LEIMAY revolves around the words and concept of Frantic Beauty, which is the subject and name of LEIMAY’s new piece, premiering at BAM in 2017. The afternoon begins with a symposium of guests from different fields who discuss the many ways of interpreting the words Frantic Beauty. Following, LEIMAY will present a performance Study for the piece. The afternoon will close with an additional Study, a solo choreographed by one of LEIMAY’s Ensemble core members, Derek Di Martini. Afterwards, audience members are invited to share their impressions of the work in a round table format.
Solo Study – Beat Your Heart Out with Derek DiMartini
Beat Your Heart Out taps into the insatiable body; the frenzied state that attempts to destroy the line between carnal consumption and self-transcendence. Passion in aggression; Cracking open the self from the inside out; Expending beyond limits. This piece was developed with LEIMAY.

Encounters with LEIMAY is a four-part series of talks, performances, and training that, seen as a whole, offer a resonant environment that mirrors LEIMAY’s artistic practice. Encounters with LEIMAY is conceived by artistic directors Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya as a chance to see the ensemble at its home, uncovering the layers of thought, practice, and experimentation that compose LEIMAY’s work. This series includes the LEIMAY LUDUS Summer Intensive, a lecture demonstration on LEIMAY LUDUS, and symposium and performance studies focused around LEIMAY’s new piece, Frantic Beauty, premiering at BAM in September 2017.
Frantic Beauty is an evening length performance and the third chapter in the BECOMING SERIES. The piece is conceived by Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya and features the LEIMAY Ensemble. In Frantic Beauty, the artists reflect on the nature of beauty, how it is understood, and how this understanding affects society.
The BECOMING SERIES is a succession of multi-disciplinary works set in immersive environments and utilizing dance, theater, video projections and live music. The series deals with matter’s constant state of becoming through growth and decay, beginnings and endings. The BECOMING SERIES is a pentalogy. Previous works in The BECOMING SERIES are Becoming -corpus, (2013) the first chapter, and borders, (2016) the second.
LEIMAY: Ximena Garnica & Shige Moriya is the duo behind CAVE, the New York Butoh Festival, and the Williamsburg SOAK festival. Comprising photography, video art, installation, and dance, and often involving interdisciplinary collaborations and training projects, LEIMAY’s sculptural, video, and light installations and contemporary performances are rooted in the body, integrating instinct-grounded choreographies and mesmerizing environments. Their performances juxtapose sound, video, light, and movement to create multi-sensory experiences that range from wild physicality to contemplative silence.
SOAK is supported, in part, by The New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. SOAK and LEIMAY Ludus Training are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council. Additional funding for LEIMAY’s presenting program is given by the Mertz Gilmore Foundation.
