LEIMAY LUDUS Lab – butoh improvisation led by Yuko Kaseki
The three LEIMAY LUDUS Labs with guest Butoh dancer Yuko Kaseki focus on developing original movement through rigorous physical training, emphasis on body awareness, and improvisation with images, gestures, space, and their multiple relationships.
Physical training is based on Noguchi gymnastics, Butoh methodology, and elements of Tai-Chi. Attention is placed in the permeability of the body, in awakening deeper layers of sensitivity, in cultivating energy through the Tanden (body center), and in listening honestly to the variants of the inner body and developing a relation to the outer realm. The three modules offer the possibility to seek and experience solo, duet and group improvisations.
Module I (3 days, 12 hrs)
October 11 – 13, 6-10pm
The first module of Kaseki’s Lab will introduce students to basic body training focused on opening sensory awareness and sharpening sensitivity. Participants will experience her work with dynamic impulses and movement accumulations.
Module II (3 days, 12 hrs)
October 14, 6-10pm; 15-16, 10am-2pm
In the second module participants will delve in improvisation using images while maintaining clear decision and playfulness. Each person is encouraged to find and reveal their own hidden message.
Module III (4 days, 16 hrs)
October 18- 21, 6-10pm
In the third module participants will work towards the creation of their solo performance. Each participant should bring their own theme to work with. The aim is to build, to deconstruct, to bricolage in order to find new and unexpected aspects in a theme. Through the exchange and sharing of materials with the group participants will solidify their solos.

ABOUT LEIMAY LUDUS
LEIMAY LUDUS is an invitation to play in the world of LEIMAY. Through LEIMAY LUDUS Ximena, Shige and the LEIMAY Ensemble share and continue to articulate LEIMAY’s physical conditioning practices, visual art craft, aesthetics and philosophies while providing another point of access to their creations and process, and contributing to an understanding of the works distinctive to LEIMAY.
LEIMAY LUDUS offers different opportunities to work with artistic director Ximena Garnica, current ensemble dancers, and with an inspiring group of local and international guest and resident teachers working within the field of butoh, physical theater, performance art and experimental vocal practices.
LEIMAY Ludus Labs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
