A Huge Success for All Involved!
We wrap up our 5th season of SOAK and yet another sequence of full houses, artist exchanges, happy students, and good cheer around the neighborhood. A big THANK YOU to this year’s amazing artists and teachers who made SOAK the success that it was! Of course, this festival also couldn’t happen without YOU – thank you for your support, for filling the room with your energy, and for those who weren’t with us physically, sent us your good thoughts from afar. THANK you to our donors, partners, sponsors, and volunteers YOUR support was essential to make SOAK a reality.
SOAK presented a cascade of acts and workshops in theater, butoh, dance, and voice this June at our home, CAVE. SOAK broadened the perceptions of our artists and audiences with work that is experimental, rigorous, and thought-provoking. SOAK created connections among many diverse individuals enriching the cultural and social relationships that lead to a healthy community.
We presented the work of 18 artists based in New York, 1 artist based out of the State and 2 artists based in Europe
We hosted both premieres and works in progress.
We offered five LEIMAY LUDUS Labs, including one with with longtime collaborator butoh dancer Moeno Wakamatsu (France) and one with former member of Min Tanaka’s butoh company Zack Fuller (USA), as well as the annual LEIMAY Ludus Summer Intensive with Artistic Director Ximena Garnica
We continued our post-performance discussions and hosted them for all performances; this kind of engagement while deepening the audience experience was insightful and very helpful to the artists, especially the ones showing works in progress.
We hosted yet another fun-filled Block Party, where children and adults, strangers and friends, came together to share food, performances, and fun!. We had a great variety roster of performing artists including opening music by F/R/Y (or some of you know him as Jack) and closing set by Jeremy Slater; Taiko Drumming by the Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Drum Ensemble; Live action painting by Czech graffiti artist Jan Miko; pop-up performances by Nicolas Noreña & Timothy Scott; as well as various durational performance art pieces from Angeli, Mario Galeano, and Lucy Kerr. On top of these acts, there were activity stations by Irena Romendik and our neighbors Scosha as well as tarot reading by Taylor Derwin.
We presented the work of two LEIMAY Ensemble members: Emily Smith and Derek DiMartini, which gave them a chance to explore their personal questions, create and experiment as individuals while each being a vital part of the LEIMAY Ensemble.
We fostered greater ties with our local neighborhood businesses, namely Scosha, Grand Street Dental, Brooklyn Oenology, Modo Yoga NYC, fellow arts & cultural non-profit powerhouse STREB, and the wonderful Wythe Hotel; we also thank our additional raffle sponsors Strand Bookstore, Spruce & Bond, HERE Arts Center, Sweethaus, 44° North Vodka, who contributed to this year’s Lucky Cookie Time.
We partnered with the New York Czech Center to enable the presentation of graffiti artist Jan Miko.
860 people attended the ten diverse festival shows, workshops and post-performance discussions at CAVE and at our LEIMAY Block Party.
Over 100 people participated in our fourth Lucky Cookie Time raffle and 12 lucky winners won prizes from our neighborhood supporters. Click here for details.
We want to thank our partners, funders, audience, volunteers and artists! It was their support and participation that made it possible. We look forward to share with you many more performances and art events in the upcoming seasons! THANK YOU!
